Greetings!
“The earth and everything on it—the world and all who live in it—belong to YHWH.” - Psalm 24:1
One of the most unexpected ways the Holy Spirit speaks to us is through the world. However, it shouldn’t surprise us that God would speak to us through the world because as Psalm 24 says, the whole earth and all that lives in it belong to God. Why wouldn’t God speak to us through the world?
Remember that Moses received his special revelation from God when he went out into the wilderness and found the burning bush. Also, Naomi learned of the redeeming love of God through her Moabite daughter-in-law, Ruth. When we talk about the Holy Spirit speaking to us through the world, that can mean through creation (like the burning bush) and it can also mean through other people (a Moabite daughter-in-law).
Missional theology talks about the Holy Spirit speaking to us through the world. The Missional Church goes outside the building and into the local neighborhood to participate in what God is already doing. The Holy Spirit is powerfully at work in the world around us. When we neglect to go out into the world, attentive to the presence of the Holy Spirit in creation and in other people, we will miss what God is already doing and is calling us to participate in.
I encourage you to seek the presence of the Holy Spirit in the world. The earth and everything in it belong to God. Open your heart to the presence of the Holy Spirit, whether in the beauty of the sun sparkling off the lake, or in the words and deeds of people outside the church. How have you heard the Holy Spirit speak to you through the world around you?
Grace and peace, Rev. Sarina
